GEO, AEO and SEO: What Is Different and What Is Not

GEO and AEO are not a replacement for SEO. Google says no special optimization is needed for its AI features, and good rankings still feed AI answers. What does change is how you measure success, how much of the work happens on other people's sites, and how much a brand's description across the web matters.

Most of SEO still applies to AI search, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. Google says plainly that its AI features need no special optimization. What genuinely changes is three things: you measure presence in answers rather than position in a list, more of the work happens on other people’s websites, and what the web says about your brand matters as much as what your pages say. That is the useful core of generative engine optimization, whatever you call it.

Three names, mostly one discipline

SEO (search engine optimization) is making your pages easy to find, crawl, understand and rank in search engines, plus earning the links and reputation that help them rank.

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the older label from the era of featured snippets and voice assistants: structuring content so a search engine can lift a direct answer from it.

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the newer label for being included, described correctly and cited when an AI engine such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot or Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode generates an answer.

The overlap is large because AI engines that search the web lean on search infrastructure. Google says that to appear as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and that “there are no additional requirements” for AI Overviews or AI Mode. OpenAI says ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers plus content from news partners.

SEO and GEO compared

Area SEO GEO / AEO
Goal Rank pages in a list of results Be named, described correctly and cited in a generated answer
Main success metric Position, clicks, organic traffic Mention rate across many runs, share of voice, citations
How stable the result is Rankings shift, but one check gives a usable position Answers vary from run to run
Where the work happens Mostly your own site, plus links Your site, plus what many other sites say about you
Technical basics Crawling, indexing, speed, structure The same, plus allowing AI search crawlers
Role of links Central ranking signal Indirect, through rankings AI retrieval relies on
Role of brand mentions Not a confirmed ranking factor Correlate strongly with AI visibility in studies
What Google says Detailed documentation Same documentation; no special optimization needed

When SEO work wins

Classic SEO is still the bigger lever when your own site has problems. If key pages are not indexed, are blocked or load badly, no amount of off-site work fixes that, because AI engines that search the web cannot cite what they cannot reach.

SEO also wins on scale of demand. SparkToro’s analysis of Datos data found that on US desktops in late 2025, Google handled 73.7% of search activity across the sites measured, against 3.2% for all AI tools combined. Desktop only, but a useful reality check. And rankings feed AI: Seer Interactive found page-one Google rankings were the strongest predictor of a brand being named by GPT-4o.

Prioritize SEO when your pages rank poorly for your main topics, when traffic from Google is still most of your pipeline, or when technical problems block crawling.

When GEO work wins

GEO thinking wins when you rank but are not named. Google’s AI answers use what it calls query fan-out, running several related searches behind the scenes, so they draw on pages beyond the top results. Ahrefs found that by 2026 only 37.9% of AI Overview citations came from the top 10 results for the query. Ranking first is no longer the only route in, and ranking well no longer guarantees a mention.

It also wins when the click is disappearing. Pew Research found that people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. If the answer is read on the page, being named in it is the visibility.

And it wins when the description is the problem. AI engines build answers from many sources, and Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands found web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility (0.664), far above backlinks (0.218). Correlation, not proof, but it explains why GEO work spends so much time off your site. This is where brand mentions in context come in.

What is actually new in measurement

The biggest practical change is how you know if it worked. A ranking report shows one position per query. AI answers do not have a stable position. SparkToro and Gumshoe found ChatGPT and Google’s AI had less than a 1 in 100 chance of giving the same brand list in two runs, and recommend tracking visibility percentage across many prompts run many times.

So GEO measurement means a prompt set built from real buyer questions, each run several times per engine, scored for whether you are named, how you are described and whether you are cited. Our guide to measuring AI visibility walks through it.

What to be wary of in GEO offers

Because GEO is new, it attracts confident claims. A few patterns deserve a skeptical question:

  • Guaranteed positions in ChatGPT or AI Overviews. Nobody outside the AI companies controls their answers, and those answers vary run to run.
  • One file or tag that “opens the door” to AI answers. Google documents no special markup for its AI features. Basic crawler access and structured data help, but no single file gets you named.
  • Rank tracking presented as a single position. Given how much answers vary, one screenshot proves little. Ask for mention rates across many runs.
  • Mass-produced pages for every question. Google calls this scaled content abuse whether a person or an AI wrote them.
  • Fake reviews or planted forum posts. These break platform rules and, in many markets, consumer law.

A good provider tells you what is documented, what is industry research and what is their own reasoning, and measures before and after. Our methodology sets out how we do that.

Can you do both?

You have to. They share a foundation. A sensible order:

  1. Fix the shared basics. Indexing, crawl access (do not block OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot if you want to appear in those engines), Organization schema with sameAs links, and consistent brand facts.
  2. Keep earning rankings for your main topics, since AI retrieval draws on them.
  3. Add off-site context where AI does not name you: mentions on real publications that describe your brand next to its category, use case and market.

That third step is what The Blue Ocean Brand Mentions does, across a large private network of real, indexed publications. First mentions are published within 30 minutes of kickoff; when engines use them varies, and we measure rather than promise.

Which to choose

Let the measured gap decide:

  1. If your site has technical or ranking problems on its main topics, spend the next quarter mostly on SEO.
  2. If you rank but AI engines rarely name you, keep SEO steady and shift new effort to GEO: measurement and off-site mentions.
  3. Ignore anyone who sells GEO as a secret file, tag or guaranteed position. Google documents none, and AI answers vary too much for honest guarantees.

What to do next

  • Check robots.txt for the crawlers you want, and confirm key pages are indexed in Search Console.
  • Run ten buyer questions through the AI visibility self-check, three runs each.
  • Get a free AI visibility check to see where SEO ends and the GEO gap begins for your brand.
  • If AI already mentions you, the GEO question shifts from being named to being named consistently and near the top of ChatGPT answers, which is where The Blue Ocean GPT comes in.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

Partly. The technical basics are the same: crawlable pages, indexing, useful content. Google says there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. What is genuinely new is measurement, because AI answers vary from run to run, and the larger weight of what other sites say about you, since AI engines assemble answers from many sources rather than ranking ten links.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

In practice, very little. Answer engine optimization was the earlier term, from featured snippets and voice assistants, and focuses on structuring content to answer questions directly. Generative engine optimization came with ChatGPT and AI Overviews and focuses on being included and described correctly in generated answers. Many practitioners now use the terms interchangeably, and the label matters less than the work.

Should I move my SEO budget to GEO?

Not wholesale. Google still dominates search activity, and AI engines draw on search indexes and rankings. A better approach is to keep SEO fundamentals funded, add measurement of AI visibility, and shift some effort toward off-site mentions where AI is not naming you. Let the measured gap, not the trend, decide the split.

Can someone guarantee my brand will appear in ChatGPT answers?

No. AI answers change from run to run, and research by SparkToro found ChatGPT and Google's AI almost never return the same brand list twice. Anyone guaranteeing a position in AI answers is promising something no outsider controls. Honest providers measure how often you are named across many runs, before and after their work.

Do I need special files or markup for AI engines?

Not according to Google, which says normal indexing and SEO apply to its AI features. Useful basics are allowing the search crawlers you want, such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, in robots.txt, and adding Organization schema with sameAs links. Treat any claim that a single file or tag gets you into AI answers with caution.
