How Brands Get Named in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google says there is no special trick for AI Overviews or AI Mode, only normal indexing and search quality, and its AI answers often cite pages outside the top ten. Studies find that brands mentioned widely across the web are the ones these answers tend to name, so mentions on indexed sites can matter as much as your own rankings.

Google’s position is simple: there is nothing extra to do. Pages get into AI Overviews and AI Mode the same way they get into Search, by being indexed, useful and eligible for a snippet. What the studies add is that these answers often cite pages that do not rank in the top ten, and that brands mentioned widely across the web are named far more often. So your brand’s presence on other sites appears to carry real weight, though the studies show correlation, not proof of cause.

For how this compares with ChatGPT and the other assistants, see how AI engines decide which brands to mention. Below, Google’s documented guidance comes first, then reach, then independent studies, then what it means for a brand.

What does Google officially say about appearing in AI answers?

Documented facts, all from Google’s page on AI features and your website:

  • “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
  • To be shown as a supporting link, a page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.”
  • Both features may use “query fan-out,” issuing several related searches across subtopics and data sources to build one answer.
  • AI feature traffic is counted inside normal Search Console reporting under the “Web” search type, not split out.
  • You can limit how content is used with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.

Query fan-out matters for brands. It means Google may pull a page into an answer for a question that page does not rank for directly, because it ranked for one of the related sub-searches. A page describing your brand for one specific use case can surface in a broader answer.

One more documented point: Google-Extended is not an AI Overviews switch. Google says it does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal.

How many people see these answers?

Documented by Google, via its executives and blog. By July 2025, AI Overviews had 2 billion monthly users across 200 countries and territories. In July 2026 Google said AI Mode had surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, and that it had brought AI Overviews and AI Mode together into one Search experience. We found no newer standalone AI Overviews figure.

Reasoning. For many brands, this is likely the largest AI surface their buyers touch, often without choosing to. Someone who types a normal Google search may get an AI answer first.

Which brands do these answers tend to name?

Industry studies. One of the largest datasets on this is Ahrefs’ analysis of 75,000 brands. Brand web mentions showed the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility, at 0.664. Classic link metrics trailed well behind.

Factor (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands) Correlation with AI Overview visibility
Brand web mentions 0.664
Branded anchors 0.527
Branded search volume 0.392
Domain Rating 0.326
Referring domains 0.295
Backlinks 0.218

The gap at the extremes is stark. Brands in the top quarter for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions; brands in the bottom half averaged 0 to 3, and 26% of brands had none. Ahrefs itself notes that correlation is not causation. Well-known brands get mentioned more and get named more; mentions may be a symptom of being known as much as a cause.

A December 2025 follow-up found branded web mentions correlate at 0.709 with AI Mode visibility and 0.656 with AI Overviews. For the debate over whether a mention needs a link to count, see our article on unlinked brand mentions.

Where do AI Overviews and AI Mode find their sources?

Industry studies. Three findings stand out.

Answers also move. Ahrefs measured a 70% chance an AI Overview changes between observations, with about 54% of named entities staying the same. Our guide to the sources AI cites most covers what brands can ethically do on Reddit, YouTube and review sites.

Does being named actually bring clicks?

Studies, with caveats. Pew found that people who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits versus 15% without one, and only 1% clicked a link inside the summary. That is a real loss for pages that used to win the click.

But being inside the answer seems to help relative to being left out. Seer Interactive found brands cited in an AI Overview had about 35% higher organic click-through than those not cited, while noting it cannot prove the citation caused the lift. Our article on whether AI visibility brings real traffic goes deeper.

What does this mean for a brand?

Reasoning, built on the facts above. Since Google says normal Search rules apply, the basics still come first: indexable pages, a clear description of what you do, and no accidental noindex or nosnippet on pages that matter.

Then the outside picture. AI answers draw heavily on pages that are not yours, and the brands they name tend to be the ones the web talks about. Suppose a regional solar installer in Arizona is the subject of a dozen accurate articles that mention it alongside “home solar,” “battery backup” and Phoenix. When Google fans a question like “who installs solar batteries in Phoenix” into sub-searches, there are more relevant pages that can be pulled in, and more of them say the same thing. That is the role of topic context: the words around your name.

None of this is a promise. Google does not publish how it picks brands for an answer, and answers change every few days. What you can do is make your brand easy to find and describe consistently, then measure. If you are wondering whether this needs a new discipline, our comparison of GEO, AEO and SEO sets out what is different and what is not.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Structured data still helps Google understand your organization, but there is no AI Overview tag or file. Anyone selling a secret AI Overview markup is selling something Google says does not exist.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal. It controls whether your content is used to train future Gemini models and for grounding in the Gemini apps and Vertex AI. AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Search, so they follow normal Search controls such as nosnippet and noindex.

Can I see AI Overview clicks in Search Console?

Not separately. Google says traffic from its AI features is included in overall search traffic in Search Console under the Web search type. You can watch trends on pages and queries that tend to trigger AI answers, and check manually or with a tracking tool whether your brand is named or linked, but Google does not split the numbers out for you.

Why does the AI Overview for my topic keep changing?

Because it is regenerated often. Ahrefs found an AI Overview has about a 70% chance of changing between observations, with an average persistence of about two days, while the core meaning stays similar. That is why one check proves little. Track how often your brand appears across many queries and dates rather than reacting to a single result.

Do AI Overviews and AI Mode cite the same pages?

Mostly not. Ahrefs found only 13.7% of cited URLs overlapped between AI Mode and AI Overviews for the same query, even though the answers meant similar things. AI Mode also named more brands per answer. A brand that is described on many relevant sites has more chances to be picked up by both.
