A new brand gets into AI answers through live search, not through what the model already knows. Every large language model is trained on data up to a fixed knowledge cutoff, and anything after that date is invisible to its built-in memory. When ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity search the web while answering, they can find a brand launched last week, but only if there is something public, crawlable and relevant to find.
So the job for a new brand is to make sure the live web has a clear, consistent, in-context record of who you are, and that the engines are allowed to read it.
Why is a new brand missing from AI’s built-in knowledge?
Training data stops well before a model reaches users. OpenAI’s current API models list knowledge cutoffs of April 30 and May 18, 2026. Anthropic’s newest Claude models list a training data cutoff of June 2026. Gemini 2.5 Pro shipped in June 2025 with a knowledge cutoff of January 2025, about five months earlier.
Labs do ship new models every few months, but each one still stops at its own cutoff. If you launched after mid 2026, no current model learned about you in training. Even a brand launched before a cutoff may have left too faint a trace to register.
How do AI engines find brands they were not trained on?
Through retrieval: the engine runs a web search, reads the results and writes an answer from them. Each engine documents parts of how this works.
| Engine | What is documented | What it means for a new brand |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search if it does not block OAI-SearchBot; search draws on third-party providers and partners | Do not block OAI-SearchBot; be findable in the wider search index |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | No special optimization needed; a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible | Normal indexing comes first |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in its answers | Let PerplexityBot crawl |
| Claude | Web search on every plan since May 2025; blocking Claude-SearchBot or Claude-User can reduce visibility | Let Claude’s search crawlers in |
Google’s guidance is plain: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, but a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Claude’s web search has been available on all plans globally since May 2025, and Anthropic notes that disabling Claude-SearchBot prevents indexing for search.
There is a hopeful data point for new brands. Ahrefs found ChatGPT shows the weakest link to classic authority metrics, which the author calls “the most accessible entry point” for emerging brands. That is correlation, not a promise.
What should a new brand set up first?
Before chasing mentions, make sure you are readable and recognizable.
- Check crawler access. Look at your robots.txt. Allowing OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot lets those search features read you. GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended control training use, which is a separate decision. Our guide to where ChatGPT gets its information explains each crawler.
- Get indexed. Submit your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. If Google has not indexed a page, it cannot be linked in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Write one clear About page. Name, category, what you do, who for, where, founding date and team, in plain sentences.
- Add Organization schema with sameAs links. Google says Organization markup helps it disambiguate your organization. sameAs points to your official profiles.
- Claim the basics. LinkedIn company page, Google Business Profile if you have a real location customers visit or you travel to them, and the review platforms that matter in your category.
Our guide to making your brand a known entity covers schema and Wikidata in more depth. A Wikidata entry is possible once serious public references describe you, which usually means after some independent coverage exists.
Why do early mentions matter so much for a new brand?
Your own site is a small part of what AI reads. McKinsey estimates brand-owned sites are roughly 5 to 10% of the sources AI search references. The rest is publishers, forums, reviews and other independent sites. A new brand with only its own website has almost nothing for an engine to cross-check.
The pattern in the data points the same way. Across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility and that 26% of brands had zero AI Overview mentions. Correlation is not proof of cause, but it is the clearest public signal available.
Mentions also help the next generation of models. Material that is public and crawlable before a future training cutoff has a chance of being learned. Material that does not exist yet does not.
What kinds of launch coverage help?
For a new brand, useful early mentions tend to be:
- Launch news in trade press and local outlets, through digital PR. Cision’s 2026 survey found 66% of journalists rely on PR-provided content for story ideas, though most pitches miss.
- Founder interviews on podcasts and YouTube, which carry your name next to your category.
- Directory and marketplace listings that are real and relevant to your niche, not low-quality link directories.
- In-context brand mentions on independent publications, each tying your name to your category, use case and market. Our guide on why context beats volume shows what that looks like.
With The Blue Ocean Brand Mentions, first mentions go live within 30 minutes of kickoff on a large private network of real, indexed publications across many niches and countries. “Live” means published. When an AI engine picks them up depends on indexing, retrieval and model updates, and it varies by engine and topic.
Any paid placement must be disclosed and its links marked rel=”sponsored” or rel=”nofollow”. Our guide to paid mention rules explains why.
How should a new brand measure progress?
Pick 20 to 30 buyer prompts, such as “best meal kit for two in Chicago” or “what is Brand X”, and run each several times on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. AI answers vary heavily: SparkToro found two runs of the same prompt almost never gave the same brand list. Track the share of runs that name you. Our guide to measuring AI visibility has the method.
Being named is step one. Once engines know you, the next goal is being recommended near the top, which is what The Blue Ocean GPT is for.

Frequently asked questions
Why does ChatGPT not know my new brand?
The model behind ChatGPT was trained on data up to a fixed cutoff date, and OpenAI's current API models list cutoffs in spring 2026. Anything that happened after that, including your launch, is not in its built-in knowledge. ChatGPT can still find you through its search feature, but only if your site and outside mentions of you are public, crawlable and relevant to the question.
How long does it take for a new brand to appear in AI answers?
Nobody can promise a date. Pickup depends on when pages get crawled and indexed, whether an engine searches the web for a given question, how it picks sources, and when models are updated. Answers also vary from run to run. Measure your mention rate on a fixed set of prompts every few weeks rather than waiting for a single moment.
Will the next model update include my brand automatically?
Not automatically. A future model can only learn about your brand if enough public, crawlable material about it existed before that model's training cutoff. That is one more reason to build accurate mentions early. Even then, there is no public way to know how a lab weighs any particular source in training.
Should a new brand block AI crawlers?
Usually not. Blocking OAI-SearchBot means your pages will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and blocking Claude-SearchBot can make you less visible in Claude's web search. Training crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot are a separate choice about model training. A new brand that wants to be found generally benefits from letting the search crawlers in.
